Solid Foundations – General

The foundation of your property is a very important element in the construction process because it is what gives strength to the completed structure. Constructed correctly it prevents future conditions that can impact your home negatively. Soil excavation follows next and depending on the type of soil it might be necessary to build forms (framing lumber) after which concrete gets poured into each section. Although foundations can be made from various materials like stone, block etc. concrete or reinforced concrete is used in the majority of new homes.

Foundations and Preparation

Normally, site preparation, excavations and foundation work are performed by the same building contractor using a digger loader and manual labour. The building site must be cleared from rocks, debris and trees, if applicable. The building crew levels the site, puts up wooden forms or marks the area with lines and chalk to serve as a template for the foundation, and digs the holes and trenches. Footings (structures where the house interfaces with the earth that supports it) are installed.

The foundation normally consist of a basement or a concrete slab. The foundation has to set and depending on conditions, can take up to 7 days. During this period there will be no or little activity on the building site. Form boards are now removed (if used) and the building process of the home can start and at this stage you can start to see the layout of your new home take shape.
Sometimes the home has a basement in which case a hole is dug. Footings are then formed and poured. Foundation walls are build and poured.

After the concrete is cured, the crew applies a waterproofing membrane to the foundation walls and back fills excavated soil into the hole around the foundation wall.
